Teachers have found the hands-on presentation of classroom stories in a challenging workshop environment to be both practical and thought-provoking.

Self-directed DIY Video Workshops

  • Mathematics Centre freely provides the workshop content through the video.
  • You provide the local leader to organise, facilitate and follow up the session.

Each video tries to capture the feel of working together as if the video presenter is in the session with you.

Videos have been created to illustrate the concept of all students learning to work like a mathematician in fascinating, captivating, absorbing classrooms. All may be freely used by school, district, cluster and system leaders.

Each of the other 37+ videos in the Cube Tube library, some made by students, are potential starting points for PD workshops. Support materials are linked in each one.

Some will have enhanced value if you are a Maths300 member. An example is Billiard Ball Bounces an activity that can be traced at least as far back as the opening pages of MATHEMATICS: A Human Endeavour, Harold R. Jacobs, W. H. Freeman and Company (1970), p.2. The Maths300 enhancement of the content beyond drawings (which is Jacob's representation) is a software version that allows easy change of variables and hence swift checking of hypotheses.

The Mathematics Centre enhancement is to the beginning of the lesson, illustrating an easy way to represent the problem on the 'floorboard' (see video and support materials) as a first step, thereby generating a meaningful reason to draw.

Billiard Ball Bounces is a classic example of how the best of mathematics education has grown over time - in this case a very long time - through teachers committed to a 'share so all can grow' approach. An attitude which was the foundation of how hands-on tasks and task centres began in Canberra, Australia, and how Mathematics Centre has developed through the contributions of hundreds of teachers over more than 30 years.

It is our hope that by visiting and revisiting these inspirational videos with colleagues you will continue to benefit from, and contribute to, the 'share so can all grow' approach.
