Mathematics Dictionary

Years K - 6

Summary

Literacy and numeracy are developing hand in hand in this activity. The work shown is from children in Years 5/6, but the same idea can be used at many levels. One of the key Calculating Changes principles is student ownership and the photos below suggest that these students are owning all of their mathematics.

Materials

  • Assorted reference materials

Procedure

Ruth explains:
As part of our Changing Places program we took on the challenge of creating an alphabet book. This idea developed from the literacy side of our focus on developing inclusive teaching practices that benefit Indigenous students. An alphabet book needs a theme, so we combined this work with the enthusiasm we have gained from the mathematics input of Changing Places and decided to make an alphabet book about Working Mathematically.

The children did an amazing amount of research and the amount of incidental mathematics learning was exciting. They had to really know what they were talking about to write each page in their Mathematical Dictionary.

Content

As Ruth's explanation suggests, the content outcomes of this activity, in both mathematics and literacy are too numerous to list. Perhaps sufficient to say:
  • mathematics & literacy partnership
