Cressy District High School
A Little More Evidence
The INISSS professional development program listed in the Research & Stories link has spawned many tantalizing stories. Here is one that adds to the validity of the research data.
The Year 7 and Year 9 statewide mathematics test results from one class at Cressy District High School were compared. This class had more or less stayed together during those three years. Each year, the class had a different teacher.
- In Year 7 they experienced a traditional mathematics learning environment focusing on learning mathematical skills.
- In Years 8 & 9 they had teachers who were part of the INISSS program. These teachers refocused the curriculum onto Working Mathematically to solve problems.
- The class is well known among other INISSS teachers because, following an extensive study the class made of the Sphinx Problem, the students chose to make their own video to publish their results.
The comparison of the test results showed that between Years 7 & 9 this class had improved 20 percentile points! The independent state assessment shifted the class from well below average to a little above average.
